About Sinus Lift Surgery
Sinus lift surgery, also known as maxillary sinus elevation, is performed for patients who do not have enough bone height to support a dental implant or if the sinuses are too big or too close for an implant. This surgery allows for greater implant stability using a bone graft that is taken from the patient's body, from an allogeneic (human cadaver), or from a xenograft (cow) bone graft. Dr. Jeffrey Allred in San Marcos, CA performs sinus lift surgery to provide more secure implants, and we at Allred Dental can work with you to help you understand the multiple benefits of this procedure.
"I had such a wonderful experience at Allred dental. Dr. Allred and his staff are super friendly and attentive they made me feel totally relaxed which is pretty rare for being at a dentist office. I was actually a little nervous going in for my procedure because I was scared it was going to be painful. In the contrary I felt no pain and they were finished before I knew it. It was great!! I would highly recommend Allred dental to anyone needing dental services."- C.C. / Google / Aug 21, 2017
"From the time the receptionist answered the phone to the time I walked out the door, I was treated very professionally from the entire staff at Allred Dental. You can expect a friendly voice from Ellen when you call to make your appointment and when you walk in the door. After a very thorough photo session of my teeth, the dental assistant walked me through a tour of my mouth asking me a lot of questions and telling me what was going on with my teeth. When Dr Allred came in, a thorough recap in her findings was presented to him and me. From there he checked himself, agreed with everything she said and had a couple additional points. Then on to my cleaning which was a breeze. They really take care to insure your comfort. Great dental experience."- A.N. / Yelp / Aug 07, 2018

Reasons for a Sinus Lift
- To prepare dental implants in the upper back jaw
- To restore bone loss from gum disease
- To increase dental implant stability
- To adjust the size of the sinus
What to Expect
Before the procedure, Dr. Allred will take thorough dental x-rays to accurately measure the current anatomy of the jaw and sinuses to determine how the sinuses should be moved. Once the bone graft is prepared, Dr. Allred will make a surgical incision in the gum tissue at the back of the mouth. Once the tissue is raised and the existing bone is visible, the graft is placed so it carefully pushes the membrane lining of the sinus up and away from the jaw. Once the bone graft is in place and the sinus is secured in a higher position, Dr. Allred will close the incision in the gum with stitches. It usually takes about 4 – 9 months before the graft has fully bonded with the existing bone and the dental implant procedure can be performed.
After sinus lift surgery, patients should expect to have swelling in the treated areas and some blood from the nose or mouth. Dr. Allred may prescribe medications for pain and inflammation, as well as an antibiotic to prevent an infection. Patients should use a saline spray to keep the nose moist and avoid blowing their nose or sneezing forcefully. Patients will return to our office in 7 – 10 days to have their stitches removed and so Dr. Allred can check their healing progress. Patients should contact their doctor right away if the swelling, pain, or bleeding has not decreased after two days.
Prior to the procedure, our financial team will contact your insurance company to determine what coverage will be offered. We will discuss with you if there will be any additional out-of-pocket costs and we also offer financial plans for your convenience.
