About TMD & TMJ
TMD (temporomandibular disorders), commonly referred to as TMJ, is characterized by significant pain in the jaw and limitation in jaw joint movement. It can affect chewing, talking, swallowing, and in some cases can cause breathing issues. There are several symptoms that are associated with TMJ, including recurrent facial pain, swelling, constant teeth grinding, facial sensitivity, jaw joint locking, and a limited range of motion in the jaw. If you are experiencing significant jaw pain or discomfort, Dr. Jeffrey Allred of Allred Dental in San Marcos, CA can perform an examination and recommend a treatment option that will work for you.
"I had such a wonderful experience at Allred dental. Dr. Allred and his staff are super friendly and attentive they made me feel totally relaxed which is pretty rare for being at a dentist office. I was actually a little nervous going in for my procedure because I was scared it was going to be painful. In the contrary I felt no pain and they were finished before I knew it. It was great!! I would highly recommend Allred dental to anyone needing dental services."- C.C. / Google / Aug 21, 2017

What to Expect
Diagnosis and treatment of TMJ is challenging, so it’s important to visit a doctor to rule out any other causes of symptoms. TMJ treatment can include surgery, injections, or physical therapy. Each case is different and an appointment for evaluating your unique situation is important, as it can help you prevent further damage. Upon a diagnosis of TMD, Dr. Allred will discuss several treatment strategies to try before recommending a surgical procedure. These treatments may include:
- Restorative dental work to align the bite
- BOTOX® injections (relaxes the muscles in the face to stop you from grinding and clenching your teeth, which leads to the painful inflammation)
- Oral appliance therapy (such as a retainer or the use of a night guard while sleeping)
- Orthodontic treatment
Dr. Allred may recommend things you can do to help with the discomfort besides simply using medication for muscle spasms, inflammation, anxiety, and pain. It is important to exercise your jaw and rest it when needed. Be mindful of stress so that you are not grinding or clenching your teeth. Avoid chewy foods and eat a soft diet to prevent unnecessary inflammation. Use heat and ice when needed to help with the pain. Having good posture also plays a role in your neck and jaw alignment.
The cost of the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder examination and diagnostic imaging services will be dependent on the patient and the specific symptoms exhibited. During your consultation, the fees will be discussed with you.
