About Dental Cleanings
To protect your teeth and ensure that they are healthy, San Marcos, CA dentist Dr. Jeffrey Allred provides routine dental cleanings. He recommends that patients receive cleanings at least twice a year to prevent disease and other oral health concerns. For the cleaning, Dr. Allred uses professional tools to eradicate plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth. He will then polish the teeth to help remove stains and discoloration. In some instances, a fluoride treatment may be included to strengthen the enamel of the teeth. With dental cleanings at Allred Dental, patients can experience improved dental health and take preventative measures with their oral health in the future.
"I had such a wonderful experience at Allred dental. Dr. Allred and his staff are super friendly and attentive they made me feel totally relaxed which is pretty rare for being at a dentist office. I was actually a little nervous going in for my procedure because I was scared it was going to be painful. In the contrary I felt no pain and they were finished before I knew it. It was great!! I would highly recommend Allred dental to anyone needing dental services."- C.C. / Google / Aug 21, 2017

What to Expect
Dental cleanings are generally painless, but if a patient has sensitive teeth or gums, a topical numbing cream can be used. If the patient has trouble getting through a dental cleaning due to anxiety or a strong gag reflex, mild sedation options are also available. A cleaning may begin with an ultrasonic instrument that helps to loosen plaque and tartar, then fine hand tools (scalers and curettes) are used to carefully scale or scrape buildup from the gumline and enamel. Once these deposits are removed, the teeth are polished using a special toothpaste and tool. If needed, Dr. Allred can go over good home oral care routines and help the patient with their brushing and flossing technique for better check-ups.
After the teeth are cleaned, Dr. Allred may perform an oral exam to check for signs of oral cancer and gum disease. To keep their teeth smooth and healthy, patients should establish a home routine that includes brushing and flossing their teeth at least once a day. Dr. Allred may offer suggestions or specific instructions, like a special mouthwash or toothpaste to treat the patient's specific concerns. Patients should be sure to schedule their next dental cleaning in six months before leaving the office or when Dr. Allred recommends they return. Waiting too long between cleanings can lead to longer appointments and more invasive treatments.
Having a proper at-home oral hygiene routine is extremely important for good oral health. If you feel like your current routine is not effective enough in preventing future dental problems, Dr. Allred recommends using Sonicare and Waterpik® water flosser products to establish a good standard of oral hygiene. Both of these products allow for a deeper, more efficient cleaning of your teeth and can provide improved dental examinations in future appointments.
Since a professional dental cleaning twice a year is considered a necessary preventative care procedure, most dental insurance carriers will cover 100% of the cost. Our office will check with each patient's insurance company to determine their coverage before billing the patient directly. Patients without dental insurance should ask about our financing options.
