About Dental Exams
Dental examinations are important for preventing and detecting oral diseases and tooth decay. During an exam, Dr. Jeffrey Allred of Allred Dental in San Marcos, CA will evaluate all areas of the mouth, including the teeth, gums, and jaws to detect any areas of concern. Typically, an exam will also consist of having digital x-rays taken to allow for a better view of the teeth and mouth. With our state-of-the-art technology, Dr. Allred can provide more advanced and detailed treatment options, including less invasive methods. Dental examinations are a great way to not only discover existing problems, but also to avoid any dental issues from arising in the future.

"I had such a wonderful experience at Allred dental. Dr. Allred and his staff are super friendly and attentive they made me feel totally relaxed which is pretty rare for being at a dentist office. I was actually a little nervous going in for my procedure because I was scared it was going to be painful. In the contrary I felt no pain and they were finished before I knew it. It was great!! I would highly recommend Allred dental to anyone needing dental services."- C.C. / Google / Aug 21, 2017
"From the time the receptionist answered the phone to the time I walked out the door, I was treated very professionally from the entire staff at Allred Dental. You can expect a friendly voice from Ellen when you call to make your appointment and when you walk in the door. After a very thorough photo session of my teeth, the dental assistant walked me through a tour of my mouth asking me a lot of questions and telling me what was going on with my teeth. When Dr Allred came in, a thorough recap in her findings was presented to him and me. From there he checked himself, agreed with everything she said and had a couple additional points. Then on to my cleaning which was a breeze. They really take care to insure your comfort. Great dental experience."- A.N. / Yelp / Aug 07, 2018

What to Expect
A thorough dental examination will start with a conversation between Dr. Allred and his patient. He will ask about recent health, including any current medications, illnesses, and surgeries. He will also ask the patient if they have noticed any changes or areas of concern. To get a complete picture of the mouth, Dr. Allred will begin by taking digital x-rays to see the teeth, gums, and bones. He will then perform a visual check of the mouth and then continue the exam with palpation (touch) to check for signs of oral cancer, decay, and disease. Probing tools will also be used to check the health of the gums by measuring gum pockets depth and to look for areas of inflammation.
If Dr. Allred finds any areas of concern during the dental examination, he will talk to the patient about possible preventative measures that may be performed at the office or at home. He will let the patient know when they should schedule their next dental exam to check on their progress. In some cases, further testing may be recommended or the patient may be referred to a specialist.
The cost for an annual dental examination varies among practices, but it averages between $100 and $300. The front office will consult with the patient’s insurance company prior to their visit since most companies cover this cost up to 100%. Patients paying out of pocket may discuss payment options during their consultation.
