About Tooth Extractions
Tooth extractions can be performed in an emergency procedure after trauma or injury, or to prevent a future problem, such as with wisdom teeth removal. At Allred Dental of San Marcos, CA, Dr. Jeffrey Allred provides extractions for patients who are experiencing pain and discomfort or have an infection caused by a tooth that is damaged beyond repair. In some cases, surgical extraction may be required, but simple extractions are also performed if the tooth appears above the gumline. Before any extraction, Dr. Allred will administer a dental exam and take digital x-rays to determine the extent of the damage.
"I had such a wonderful experience at Allred dental. Dr. Allred and his staff are super friendly and attentive they made me feel totally relaxed which is pretty rare for being at a dentist office. I was actually a little nervous going in for my procedure because I was scared it was going to be painful. In the contrary I felt no pain and they were finished before I knew it. It was great!! I would highly recommend Allred dental to anyone needing dental services."- C.C. / Google / Aug 21, 2017
"I used to be so scared of the dentist until I started seeing Dr. Allred. Everyone is so caring and they legitimately care about you as a patient and a friend. They care so much, they take your blood pressure when you sit in the chair! Thanks to Dr. Allred and his staff, I found out that I had extremely high blood pressure which was causing daily migraines and other health problems! Who knew I would find that out at the dentist? They care, they understand you financial situations, and they do everything then can to make you feel at home. Thumbs up!"- S.S. / Facebook / Nov 16, 2018

What to Expect
For wisdom tooth removal, it’s our goal to make the process as comfortable and efficient as possible. We will begin with an oral exam and an x-ray, which will reveal whether or not the wisdom teeth are emerging properly. If you and Dr. Allred have determined that the best course of action for your unique situation is wisdom tooth extraction, together you’ll devise a course of treatment that best suits your needs. For a simple extraction for both wisdom or regular teeth, a local anesthetic is usually given to numb the gum before the dentist loosens and removes the full tooth from the jawbone. He will carefully separate the tooth from the gum tissue and ligaments before the socket is cleaned and closed. For a surgical extraction, a patient may be given local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. To remove the tooth, Dr. Allred must surgically cut through the gums and bone. Once the tooth is removed, the socket will be cleaned and stitched closed.
After an extraction, a blood clot will usually form in the socket of the removed tooth, which should be kept clean and watched for signs of infection. Dr. Allred may suggest over-the-counter pain medication for any discomfort after the procedure or prescribe painkillers. Patients will usually follow a soft food or liquid diet for at least one day after the extraction, and should also be careful brushing their teeth to help the socket heal. The gums and bone usually begin to heal 1 – 2 weeks after the extraction, but it may be up to six months before the mouth is fully restored.
If the extraction is a medical necessity, most/part of the cost will usually be covered by dental insurance. The coverage may vary based on whether it is a simple or surgical extraction, so our office will confirm the patient's benefits and out-of-pocket cost. Our office offers financing plans and we accept several payment options.
