About IV Sedation
Intravenous (IV) sedation, also known as "sleep dentistry," is provided by Allred Dental in San Marcos, CA to help patients who get anxiety from dental procedures or appointments. IV sedation does not put the patient fully to sleep, but instead uses anti-anxiety medication that is administered directly into the patient's veins to help them feel relaxed and calm during the procedure. The patient will experience relaxation and temporary memory loss, and Dr. Allred will adjust the medication as needed during treatment. Talk to our team at Allred Dental about using IV sedation for your dental procedure if you are experiencing fear or worries.
IV Sedation Reviews
"I've had a lot of experience with dentists and Dr. Allred is the best I've been to. He is gentle, professional and does beautiful work. He also has what seems to me to be the latest in equipment. If you're a little neurotic (or a lot as I am) about dental visits, then this is the place for you. His staff without exception are great. They are very helpful and knowledgable. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr. Allred to my family and friends."- B... / Google / Jun 22, 2017
What to Expect
Before the patient’s appointment, Dr. Allred will go over sedation options and chose the best method. If IV sedation is used, a thin needle will be inserted into the patient’s vein for distribution throughout the body. The patient will begin to feel the sedation working within a few minutes, then Dr. Allred can begin the procedure. The IV levels will be monitored and adjusted by Dr. Allred throughout the procedure to ensure the patient remains sedated and safe. Once the procedure is finished, the IV will be removed and the patient will typically feel awake and alert again in a few minutes.
Patients should not drive for at least 24 hours after their IV sedation, so it is suggested that patients make arrangements in advance with a responsible adult who will take them home. Most patients sleep for the rest of the day after their IV sedation, but they should remain well hydrated with plenty of water. Some nausea and memory loss may experienced during the dental procedure, but this does not last long. Patients should contact our team at Allred Dental immediately if they have any abnormal or long-lasting side effects.
IV sedation is usually covered at least in part by dental insurance if it is used during certain procedures. Coverage is usually less or none if the IV sedation is chosen by the patient for dental fears and anxieties. The front office will contact each patient’s insurance company to get their maximum coverage and an estimate of out-of-pocket expenses. Patients are given many payment options at our office as well as help with medical financing plans.
