About Ridge Augmentation
After a tooth extraction, ridge augmentation is performed and involves placing a bone graft directly into the empty socket where the tooth's roots once were. This is done to help recreate the natural shape of the gums and jaw after an extraction. Ridge augmentation can prevent jawbone deterioration where a tooth socket once was following a tooth extraction, making it possible for patients to use dentures or receive dental implants in the future. San Marcos dentist Dr. Jeffrey Allred at Allred Dental can help determine if a ridge augmentation is necessary and can inform you of the benefits of this procedure.
Ridge Augmentation Benefits
Ridge augmentation procedures have been proven to benefit the overall health of a patient's smile, and to improve their appearance and boost their confidence. In addition, the ridge augmentation procedure:
- Recreates a natural bone and gum ridge
- Improves aesthetic appearance
- Increases stability for long-term function and oral health
- Reduces gaps between the gums and dental restorations
"I had such a wonderful experience at Allred dental. Dr. Allred and his staff are super friendly and attentive they made me feel totally relaxed which is pretty rare for being at a dentist office. I was actually a little nervous going in for my procedure because I was scared it was going to be painful. In the contrary I felt no pain and they were finished before I knew it. It was great!! I would highly recommend Allred dental to anyone needing dental services."- C.C. / Google / Aug 21, 2017

What to Expect
A ridge augmentation procedure is most commonly performed in our facility under local anesthesia. Sedation options are available and will be discussed with patients beforehand. During the simple surgical procedure, bone graft material will be placed into the exposed tooth socket. This may be done immediately following an extraction. Following the placement of the graft material, the gum tissue will be carefully placed over the socket and the wound will be closed, usually with sutures. After a healing period, the ridge is considered ready for dental restorations like dental implants.
The specific aftercare treatment will vary from person to person depending on their unique situation. Following a patient's ridge augmentation procedure, Dr. Allred and our Allred Dental team will talk about wound care and oral hygiene routines. Antibacterial mouthwash and pain medications may be discussed to prevent infection and to relieve discomfort. Should a patient become worried during the healing process, our team will be available to answer any questions and address concerns.
At Allred Dental, we will work with you and your insurance company to determine what will be covered. Our office also offers financing plans to help make procedures more affordable. Prior to treatment, we will discuss all costs with you.
